Rosemary

ROSMARINO.

Woodcut of rosemary: a woody branch with narrow leaves and small flowers, growing from a cut stump.
Herbario nuovo, Rome, 1585. John Carter Brown Library.

Rosmaris ictericos sanat, iecori atque lieni
Proficit: exacuit visumque, & vulnera iungit;
Calfacit, attenuatque, aperitque, & digerit; oris
Halitus & manso bene commendatur ab ipso,
Ventriculi affectus frigentes discutit, inde
Et vomitum; capitis miscetur rite lauacris:
Profluuia alba vteri cohibet, dentumq; refluxus,
Expedit infarctus vasorum, & viscera cuncta
Roborat: ad capitis defluxus, ac resolutos
Is valet, ad stupidos pariter, morbosque caducos:
Suffitu & tutos praeseruat peste penates,
Mnemosynem, cerebrumque simul corroborat, & cor:
Floribus ex huius conditum appone liquore
Sacchareo cordi, matrici, ventriculoque
Conueniens idque inuenies, atque vtile valde
Arteriamque sua simul hic acrimonia acerbat.

Rosemary heals the jaundiced, and does good to the liver and the spleen; it sharpens the sight and joins wounds; it warms, thins, opens, and digests; the breath of the mouth is well commended by it when it is chewed; it scatters the cold ailments of the stomach, and so the vomiting; it is duly mixed in the washings of the head; it holds back the white flowings of the womb and the fluxes of the teeth; it frees the stopped vessels, and strengthens all the entrails; it is good for the rheums of the head and for the palsied, for the stupefied alike, and for the falling sickness; burnt as a fumigation it keeps the household gods safe from the plague; it strengthens the memory, the brain, and the heart together. Set its flowers in a sugared liquor, and you will find it fit and most useful to the heart, the womb, and the stomach; though with its sharpness it also roughens the windpipe.
