For Scholars and Libraries
How the press checks what it publishes, how to cite its work, and what a library needs to catalogue and order its books.
How sources are handled
Every fact, date, figure, and quotation the press publishes is taken from a source read for the purpose, never from memory: the full text where it can be reached, otherwise the abstract. Each reference records which was read and where, and where only an abstract was read, the text claims no more than the abstract says. A claim whose source cannot be reached and read is rewritten to what a readable source says, or cut.
The Materia Medica’s Verification page sets out what was checked in it, how, and what was found and corrected, entry by entry and source by source. Each entry marks beside its citations what each was checked against, and, where the press has read the source, whether in full, in part, or in its abstract, with a link to the text read.
Citing the press’s work
The Materia Medica as a whole: Release 1.0, September 25, 2026, edited by B. C. P. Statema. Its citation, in several styles and as BibTeX or RIS, is at the foot of the Materia Medica.
Every entry carries its own version number and the date it was last revised, with citations in the Chicago, MLA, and APA styles and BibTeX and RIS files for Zotero, EndNote, and Mendeley. Earlier versions of an entry are kept at their own addresses, so a citation keeps pointing at the text that was cited.
Entries link to Plants of the World Online, GBIF, and Wikidata where they apply, and every name in the database, in every language, is gathered in the Concordance of Names. The Bibliography lists every source cited.

The translations
The Timeline of Editions traces each work the press translates from its first printing, through the printings between, to the press’s own edition. The reference material lists the editions and sources behind the books.
Rights, review copies, and images
Review copies: Press & Reviewers. Rights, licensing, distribution, and bulk orders: Business Inquiries.
The plates are reproduced from printed herbals, botanical atlases, and museum collections, each with its credit; the Illustration Archive gathers them with their sources.
The publisher
The Thinking Press, Kenosha, Wisconsin, established 2026. B. C. P. Statema writes the press’s own books and edits the Materia Medica; each translation names its translator on its page. For anything not covered here, write to the press.
