Notes
The notes are the translator’s. Each is marked in the text with a dagger and a roman numeral.
†I Kerner names the lady from the trimming she orders. The Grimms’ Deutsches Wörterbuch, s.v. Schneppe, sense 2c, gives a beak-shaped point, stiffened with whalebone, at the front of a woman’s dress; s.v. Schnepper it allows that the form can stand for Schneppe. The German word is kept so the play on the name stays visible.
