White Henbane

HIOSCIAMO BIANCO.

Woodcut of white henbane: a spreading plant with broad rounded leaves and flowers in the leaf joints.
Herbario nuovo, Rome, 1585. John Carter Brown Library.

Albus Hyosciamus refrigerat, ordine terno,
Et calidos contra fluxus prodest, & acutos;
Inflammata iuuat, aufert sensumq; dolorem;
Vndantes sistit menses; oculosq; dolentes
Atque aures simul hec placat, pariter mala vuluae;
Testibus inflatis, mammisq; tumentibus affert
Praesidium, dentum mulcet, cunctosq; dolores.

White henbane cools, in the third order, and does good against hot and sharp fluxes; it helps what is inflamed, and takes away the feeling of pain; it stops the menses in flood; it quiets aching eyes and ears alike, and the ills of the womb; to swollen testicles and swollen breasts it brings protection; it soothes the teeth, and every pain.
