A physician of Seville, the port of the Indies, who never crossed the ocean but examined everything that came back. His book on the medicines of the New World (1565–1574), put into English as Joyfull Newes out of the Newe Founde Worlde, introduced Europe to tobacco, sassafras, guaiacum, and balsam of Peru.
